Shawn Carey has stepped into the role of Eric Schwazenegger as the new assistant principal of Middletown High School. Carey began his role in August of the 2024-2025 school year.
Carey’s predecessor, Schwazenegger, left the school to take a position at Walkersville High School.
Carey arrived at Middletown with 30 years of administrative and teaching experience, including serving as a science teacher, teaching physics and chemistry at Monocacy Middle School. He also has past experience at other high schools such as Frederick High School, Tuscarora High School, and Thomas Johnson High School.
Middletown High School students conducted an interview with Carey to get to know more about him, his ideas, and his experiences as an educator.
In the interview, Carey was asked about the transition from each of the schools he previously worked at, and what his take away was from each.
“I’m really happy here. It’s different. This is a refreshing change,” Carey said. “Everything has been great so far. Everyone is great to get along with, and overall it’s just a great place.”
Carey said he plans to continue the long tradition of excellence at Middletown, and see’s the school as a great place for him to finish his career.
“We get into this profession as educators because we want to help students and help children better themselves, so my goal has not changed from that,” said Carey.
Carey was then asked about his personal life, to give students a chance to get to know him more on a personal level.
“I have a son who is 13 and a daughter who is 10. They are both invested in sports so we do a lot of stuff there. We always try to do things together as a family, so overall it’s a great family unit,” he said.
As the students and staff of Middletown High School have gotten to know Carey, everyone agrees his is a great fit for our system and community, and with him as a part of our team this school year should be great.
