Over the last few years, Middletown has been overwhelmed with construction all over the town. There is a new development right by the elementary school as well as road work on main street. Some of the work being done includes sidewalk installation, water line connections, and adding a pedestrian bridge.
Also, on April 9, the Middletown burgess and commissioners voted on an annexation agreement that brought 94 acres into the town limits, according to the Frederick News Post. A new development with 148 active adult homes will begin construction in 2023.
People that favored the annexation said that the development wouldn’t impact schools because there is a 55-and-older age restriction. “It would, however, generate new sources of tax revenue to help cover the town’s costly sewer and water infrastructure upkeep and allow growth on the town’s terms instead of the county’s,” wrote Hannah Dillinger of the Frederick News Post.
The Frederick News Post also published an article about traffic concerns around the elementary, middle, and high schools. Frederick County Public Schools came up with a plan that would greatly reduce traffic, according to John Miller, the Burgess of Middletown. The plan would add a traffic circle between the elementary and middle schools, and it would also straighten parts of Schoolhouse Drive.
This design would be a huge upgrade, but it would come at a price of $1.2 million. That was the estimated price prior to completion. When it was complete, the total price came in at $3.8 million, much higher than expected.
Plans are in place to modernize the middle and high schools, and they plan on doing the road changes at that time. Ryan Marshall and Emma Kerr of the Frederick News Post wrote, “The Middletown High modernization is slated to be completed in 2028.” They also mention that the traffic improvement will be completed sometime after that.
