Shawn Carey is the new Vice Principal at Middletown High School. With over thirty-one years of experience in education, Carey’s education began as a chemistry and physics teacher at Monocacy Middle School. And over the years, he taught at several other schools, including Frederick, Tuscarora, and Governor Thomas Johnson High School. His connection with Middletown is also personal: he coached athletics and football here for two years and has a total of thirteen years of coaching experience.
Reflecting on his return to Middletown as Vice Principal, Carey described the experience as “awesome” and a “very nice, good change.”, adding that our student body is hard-working and goal-focused, a very motivated group of students. He appreciates the hardworking, goal-oriented students at the school and feels that the school has a strong, motivated student body.
Carey earned his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Shepherd University and went on to complete his master’s degree at Hood College. He has been serving as an assistant principal for seven years and is passionate about helping students succeed. “I hope any interaction with students enhances their day,” Carey says. His daily job changes, but he helps students, deals with discipline when needed, and talks with students. He likes the chance to make a positive difference and impact on their school experience.
When asked how long he plans to stay at Middletown, Carey shared that he is unsure but still enjoys his work. He also reflected on the differences between Middletown and the other schools he’s worked at. “Other schools have different issues that we don’t face here,” he said, adding that every school has its own unique challenges.
Carey described his career as fulfilling and said that he is a different person now compared to when he first started teaching, but his goals to help students have not changed. Hes devoted to helping students and there education. He looks forward to continuing to contribute to the success of Middletown High School.
