A safety barrier was constructed in the Middletown High School gym due to safety concerns. The idea had been proposed by MHS Principal Lee Jeffrey. With the help and support of the Sports Boosters, the fence was built by Frederick Fence in late November of 2016.
This project had not been discussed publicly until it really happened. MHS Sports Director Mike Desimone sheds some light on the subject saying “It was an idea that was in the works for a while.” “There was a concern of kids or things falling through the cracks.”
Desimone states that the responses about the barrier have been positive so far. He adds that in addition to improving the safety of the atmosphere, it also looks really nice. It might not be much benefit during school hours. But when events are held in the gym, there is a lot more security in having the barrier there, says Desimone.
Jeffrey shared that the idea had been in the works for a few years until everything began to come together. The cost of the project was a couple thousand dollars. She says that “responses from parents and students have been very positive”, and the addition felt necessary to have.
In relation to the future of the MHS gymnasium and any further renovations that are in the workings, Desimone shares that “ Yes, there is potential for a complete gym renovation.” A project like this would include tearing up and replacing the floors, painting the walls, and replacing or getting rid of the banners altogether.
