Middletown High School students ages 16 or older will be able to register to vote on March 14, 2014 during their lunch shifts, if they choose to. The registration will be conducted by representatives of the Frederick County Board of Elections and League of Women Voters during all lunch shifts. All students who will be 18 or older by Nov. 4, 2016 are eligible to sign up to vote.
MHS students and staff have added their input about how they feel about the Voter Registration.
Maddy Montgomery, MHS senior, said that she is “planning on registering to vote,” but isn’t very interested in politics so she’s not sure what party to affiliate with yet.
Young adults who are starting to vote will affect the elections in many ways. MHS government teacher, Jerry Donald, said that “many of these people will be voting for 70 years, so their votes will have a huge impact.”
MHS junior, Meghan Brown, added that she would like to see a presidential candidate that “can solve our internal issues and someone that is hardworking, persistent, and honest.”
Samantha Hockenbery, MHS junior, said that she “would like to see the students have more of an impact with decision that are made.”
Jack Littrell, MHS junior, would like to see “Chris Christie from New Jersey” run for president in 2016.
Jerry Donald, MHS government teacher, added that the representatives from the Board of Education “do important work” in the school system.
If Samantha Hockenbery, an MHS junior, could run for any office, she would run for president because then she would be able to make decision that would be better for the people of the United States.
Voting is an important part of our country because it will determine what kind of world we want to live in. If people are registering to vote, they should take it seriously in order for our nation to be changed.
