Shawn Carey is the new assistant principal of Middletown High School.
Carey started his 31st year at Middletown, 8 of those years he was an assistant principal.
Carey started as a Monocacy Middle School science teacher, continuing his career at Frederick High School, Tuscarora High School, Thomas Johnson High School, and finally MHS. He doesn’t know how long he will be at MHS but he plans to end his career here.
This isn’t Carey’s first year involved at Middletown. Carey was a Middletown varsity football coach in the past. He conveyed his happiness to be back at Middletown when he said, “I have some ties back to Middletown, it’s nice to be back.”
Carey’s first impression of Middletown was great. He says the switch to Middletown was “a good change…it was very rewarding.” He also expresses his gratitude towards the Middletown staff.
As an assistant principal Carey enforces discipline and helps students if they need help.
Carey explains the population difference creates a contrast from his previous schools. He explains how there are “More fires that you have to put out,” at his previous schools compared to Middletown. A more rural school like Middletown has different issues Carey describes when he says “situations and issues that students face there are that students in the more rural areas don’t…it’s just different.”
When it comes to Carey’s schooling he got a degree in teaching chemistry at Shepherd University. He then moved onto Hood College where he got his masters degree in Leadership.
Outside of school Carey has a “good family unit” supporting him. This includes his wife, his 14 year old son, and his 10 year old daughter.
The most important element is that Carey is happy to be at Middletown and everyone is excited to see a new page in the book for the Middletown community.
