The Met Gala also known as the Met Ball is a largely known fundraising event celebrated annually. Bringing artists, celebrities and fashion icons together to benefit the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City.
Each year the Met Gala attracts a select few of 700 designers, artists and celebrities to the grand event. You can be assured an invite if you are a well-known celebrity or the date of one, if you have $25,000 laying around for a ticket or if you donate an overwhelming amount of $75,000. If none of those apply to you then chances are attending the Met Gala aren’t in your future.
If you aren’t familiar with what the Met Gala is, just hearing it sounds like a back account crying. Not only is the ticket pricey but the wardrobe too. You are not only to come in your best but attire that screams art, imagination and expression. Every year the Met Gala has themes that go along with that year Costume Institute Exhibit, and those who attend are expected to bring that theme into their gowns or suits.
This year’s theme was “China: through the looking Glass” Tales of the East culture in Art, Fashion and Film. Celebrities whom portrayed the theme throughout their attire were quite evident through boldly stated makeup to patterned gowns.
Those who chose to adapt this year’s theme among others included Zendaya, Lady Gaga and Sarah Jessica Parker
Zendaya brought some light to the red carpet in a stunning black and red deep V gown complete with a train, the bottom half of her gown was decorated with suns. Her accessories included bracelets, an arm cuff and a tiara all with the same an identical sun just as her gown. As her gown made the statement she left her makeup subtle and simple with a natural brow, long lashes and a nude lip color.
Lady Gaga never disappoints, she took the theme to a whole new level. With Attire custom made she wore a Balenciaga by Alexander Wang. From what is visibly seen she too wore a deep v gown embroidered in jewels. But the real show stopper was what was covering her gown, a floor length white and black kimono also complete with a train. Her accessories included a black, bedazzled head piece and round statement earrings. Unlike Zendaya she decided to go bold with her makeup, with an intense smokey eye, bold, carved eyebrows, bright pink cheeks and a rosy lip color.
And lastly someone who everyone could agree made a statement, Sarah Jessica Parker. From head to toe Sarah was the definition of “China: through the looking Glass”. Her gown was custom made one shoulder by H&M, on the side with a sleeve a strip of various fabrics and patterns stood out from the black silk, the back of the dress was covered in red flowers. The statement was her head piece made by Philip Treacy, with red and black detail the head piece looked much like flames, at each end the head piece had long, red tassels. As for her makeup she had a light blue smokey eye with natural cheeks and a light pink lip.
With each year the themes along with the attire get more extravagant, hopefully the celebrities can keep up. Maybe next year a discount for the tickets too, one can dream at least.
