Have you ever noticed that some people seem to be able to maintain a relatively positive attitude regardless of what’s happening around them? Like everyone, they appreciate the good times, but they also seem to be able to focus on the positive in the face of stress and some pretty negative things.
Fortunately, a positive attitude can be cultivated, with a little practice. Although we are born with specific temperamental tendencies, you can strengthen your mind’s natural tendency toward optimism and gratitude if you work at it.
Studies show that having a sense of gratitude can help you maintain a more positive mood in your daily life. People with a greater level of gratitude tend to have stronger relationships because they focus LESS on what is wrong and other peoples’ flaws while focusing more on positive things and showing appreciation to people even when those people may not deserve it.
When I was in 10th grade, I was not thankful. My parents split up, I went from living in a suburban Pittsburg neighborhood, to living with my grandparents in Ohio for a while because we had little money and no place to live. I ended up in a small West Virginia town. I may not have been thankful then, but I look back now and realize that the hardship made me realize my happiness was up to me. I finished high school, I finished college at WVU and I still have friends in West Virginia.
So starting today with Thanksgiving only days away, when you notice yourself grumbling about your situation, your family or friends, or even your own imperfections, remind yourself to notice positive things about yourself and the people and things in your life.
In the words of journalist, Alphonse Karr:” Some people are always grumbling because roses have thorns; I am thankful that thorns have roses.”
With something to think about I’m Mrs. Jeffrey, have a beautiful day.
