Shawn Carey becomes the new assistant principal for Middletown High School.
Carey joined MHS during his 31st year and has been an assistant principal for 8 years. He explains how there has been a long history before his new role at Middletown. Carey doesn’t know how long he will stay at Middletown, but he plans to end his career here.
This is not Carey’s first time at Middletown. Carey was a previous Middletown varsity football coach, he expresses his joy to be back when he says, “I have some ties back to Middletown, it’s nice to be back.”
Carey describes his first impression of Middletown as awesome. His words to describe the athletes he worked with were, “responsive and hardworking.” Carey shines a positive light on Middletown when he says “It was a good change…it was very rewarding.”
Carey’s goals for Middletown include: helping students and helping children better themselves. He explains his goal with a heartwarming quote when he says, “I hope any interaction I have with a student enhances their day.”
Carey fulfills his job as an assistant principal by helping students if they need help and asserting discipline.
Before becoming an assistant principal, Carey worked as a teacher at a middle school. He continued teaching at Frederick High School, then went to Tuscarora when he eventually ended up back at Fredrick. His precursor before Middletown was TJ.
Carey got his degree from teaching chemistry at Shepherd university and later got his masters for leadership at Hood college.
Carey explains how the difference between his old schools and Middletown are the situations that come with it due to the population difference, “More fires that you have to put out,” is how he describes the work demand of populated schools. He says “situations and issues that students face there are that students in the more rural areas don’t…it’s just different.”
During Carey’s freetime, he has a 14 year old son who just started playing football, and plays baseball. He also has a wife and a 10 year old daughter who just started playing volleyball. He describes it as a “good family unit.”
Most importantly the new assistant principal, Shawn Carey, is happy at Middletown High School.
