New assistant principal Shawn Carey, arrived at Middletown High School to take the place of Eric Schwarzenegger who left Middletown. While arriving in Middletown, Shawn Carey explains the previous schools he had attended along with the positions he used to be in.
“I taught chemistry and physics at Monocacy Middle School, then taught many years at Frederick High School, and then went to Tuscarora, then ended up back at Frederick high, then went to TJ, and then ended up here this year.”
Carey also explains how he coached football at “Fredrick, Tuscarora and actually coached here for 3 or 4 years.” Asking Carey how long he was teaching at TJ, responding with, “I was teaching there for like 2 years there, and then I got promoted to assistant principal and I was there I think, 6 years.”
Carey got his teaching chemistry degree which was then followed by his “masters for leadership at Hood (college).”
Students wonder how Mr. Carey will improve the overall setting of Middletown High School. Pondered by this question, Mr. Carey responds with “We want to help students and help children better themselves. So I don’t think my goal has changed from that, anytime I hope any interaction that I have with the student enhances their day.” Every staff member at Middletown has their aspirations for the school, which may differ based on their role, but are generally focused on the well being of students.
Carey is unsure how long he will be at Middletown High School due to his wife sadly having cancer. But, he says, “as long as she’s working and fighting cancer, I think I’m going to keep working, because I think if I set home it would drive me nuts.” Though he did not have a definite answer of how long he is staying, he stated “I plan on ending my career here.”
We were curious to ask Mr.Carey, “what did your schools have in Middletown doesn’t?” The schools that Mr. Carey attended all Frederick County City schools, explaining how both school areas are very different upon one another.
A big difference he noticed was a bigger population, mentioning how busy he was due to the population size, then he is here which “makes it really nice.” Another difference was the bigger schools had “more faculty and more staff so you have a lot more course offerings then you do here.” Mr.Carey then explains how it works for each school due to how the schools run their systems differently with “every school having advantages and disadvantages.”
Mr.Carey believes that the dynamic of Middletown has led him to a less stressful job, which said previously, was the reason why he transferred here. In addition, he adds that the “needs are different,” from each school that he was previously at.
Shawn Carey is glad to be here at Middletown and is glad that he transferred here to help students who struggle, or just to make their day. He explains how he will have a “fulfilling career” by the time of his retirement.
