Middletown High School students in Scott Bean, Maria Duva, and Sharon Steger’s classes planted trees around the baseball field and along the farm behind the school.
They planted more than 150 trees as part of a national effort to increase the greenness of school campuses.
The tree planting, which took place in all periods, was paid for by a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) grant provided by the government.
All students learned how to properly dig a hole, set the tree, and the proper amount of compost and soil.
Most students were “just glad we get to go outside,” while others thought it was a worthy cause to help the local environment and school yard habitat.

Great article and wonderful pictures! I wondered what the story was with the trees being planted, and now I know. I had the perfect view of the planting while I was teaching in Mrs. Lehman’s classroom. What a great learning opportunity for the students who did the planting. I can only imagine how beautiful that area will be in years to come. The work of today’s students will benefit generations to pass through MHS. Good job to all concerned with the planting and this article.
