Middletown High School’s Concert Choir and Vocal Ensemble are traveling to the PBS studio in Owings Mills on October 20 to record a selection arranged by Tim Janis.
The choirs were chosen to be included in the recording of the PBS special “Celebrate America,” part of Janis’ fall tour, “Believe in Dreams.”
Over 8000 high school choirs across the country will be taped performing different songs arranged by Janis this fall. Students from Middletown will be singing, “Oh Shenandoah,” a traditional piece on which Janis has put a new spin.
“It’s a well known song but this version is unexpected and fresh,” said MHS senior Sarah Spiegel. “Altos don’t often get the melody so it’s nice for a change with the sopranos harmonizing on lower notes.”
“The experience will be great for Middletown, especially if Janis gives feedback and helps make us better performers,” said MHS sophomore Timmy Huth.
Janis’ PBS special is providing schools the opportunity to showcase their music programs. The choirs and Director Jessica Parsley have high hopes for Middletown’s performance. The program will air in March of 2010.
