With a regular season record of 14 – 1, it’s safe to conclude the Knights volleyball team had a spectacular year despite an early finish to their playoff run.
The Knights remained almost undefeated throughout the season, although they suffered a close loss to Thomas Johnson High School, 3-5, in the last game of the regular season.
“We could have beat TJ our last game to have a perfect record,” said MHS senior Mattie Smith. “They were a good match, but we were definitely better. I think we just thought we’re unbeatable since we were undefeated so far throughout the season. We all improved skillwise this year, but, in my opinion, we could have made it much farther.’’
The Knights ended their season ranking second in their bracket. As they prepared to enter playoffs, the girls really stepped up their intensity in practices and in games.
Their first game into playoffs the team defeated the defending state champions, the Francis Scott Key Eagles.
The following match was against Century, and it was clear from the beginning that this match was going to be close. The Knights played five tough rounds but lost 9-15 in the last game. It was the end of the road for the Knights volleyball team.
“We never would’ve made it as far as we did without the team chemistry we had. We were not only a team, but we were a family, and that’s what was different about us this year,” said MHS junior Holly Wright.
