The second time’s the charm. The Middletown High School girls varsity soccer team will head to the University of Maryland and Baltimore county stadium on Nov 19th to compete under the lights for the 2A State Championship.
“Winning this game proves that we are just as good as we were last year,” said MHS sophomore striker Mary Ann Pritts.
At the beginning of the season, the Knights faced a frustrating first loss against Brunswick. Since then, “we’ve worked harder paid more attention at practice and focused more as a team,” said MHS junior Caitlin McLister.
Toward the end of the season, the Knights were preparing to face off against the Glenelg Gladiators, whom they previously defeated in the 2010 2A Championship.
Glenelg entered the game determined and prepared to win, but after two long scoreless halves and double overtime, the game belonged to either team.
MHS juniors Mackenzie Noel and Amanda Giaque both put the ball into the back of the net and scored two crucial penalty kicks for the Knights.
“Our team had been practicing penalty kicks every day; it really paid off in the semi final game when we ended up winning with a penalty kick,” said MHS junior Gabby Riggs.
Pritts finished the game by knocking the ball into the back of the net to grab the semi win, ensuring the Knights a spot in the Championship.
The girls will compete for the title against South Anne Arundel, a team of motivated athletes determined to win the first state title ever for their school.
Equally motivated the Knights want to prove they are “just as good as last year, even though people doubted us,” said Pritts.
“The varsity team made it this far because it is determined to keep its title as state champions,” said freshman Caroline Traini
