Hundreds and thousands of people around the country take the streets in Washington D.C. for the March for our lives protest demanding the government to reduce gun violence. The latest mass shooting in Parkland, Florida inspired people to come and for this event to happen.
Junior Erin Noel, who attended the march tells us why she marched, “I want to see change in the government regarding how gun violence is treated. More than anything I just want people to be safe.” Many students from around the country who attended the march agree that gun control is a serious issue and tried to inspire their peers and many others to vote.
Many survivors from mass shootings including ones in Florida touched many hearts with their speeches. Sophomore Emma Wilkinson shares her feelings about the speeches, “It was super sad”, says Emma, “We heard speeches from Parkland victims and sang happy birthday to someone that died.” No politicians spoke at the March and singers such as Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus shared their statements within their music.
The March for our Lives was a peaceful and positive march/protest for many people to express how they felt. Emma expresses what it was like to be part of such a big event, “it was really crowded but also really great because we were all out there for the same reason.”
The march was more of a rally rather than an actual walk and security was heavy, making sure there was no violence by closing off streets and barricading Pennsylvania Avenue.
The March for our Lives was held on March 24 including many other marches around the country. Sophomore Nico DeArcangelis states, “The march did raise awareness for support in wanting and needing gun reform.” Protesters plan to try and grow the movement hoping to influence congress on gun reform.
