The 2016 NCAA championships brought many upsets to the table in the men’s division. The meet was won for the second straight year by the Texas Longhorns who outlasted their competitors in the PACIFIC-12 Conference in California.
The upset of the meet perhaps came in the 1650 freestyle, won by Penn senior, Chris Swanson. Sixty-four expert predictors cast their ballots for the predicted top five in every event; none of them predicted Swanson to win.
Another huge story from the night was Texas freshman, Townley Haas. Hass swam his way to two of the biggest upsets of the night.
The freshman won the 500 freestyle after only receiving four first place predictions. He also dominated the field in the 200 freestyle; receiving 6% of the ballots, to win the event.
He went on to not only win but record the fastest time in history. The largest called victories of the night went to Olympians, Caeleb Dressel and Ryan Murphy.
Dressel received 98% of the first place ballots to win the 50 freestyle, an event he owns the U.S Open record in. Dressel also received 96% of the ballots in the 100 freestyle.
Murphy, the dominant man in the back stroke competition was predicted to win his best event, the 100 backstroke, receiving 98% of the first place ballots. Murphy also won the 200 backstroke with 96% of the ballots.
Murphy and Dressel are two athletes I would keep my eye on during the 2016 Rio Olympics this summer.
