Recently, the popular girl band, Little Mix released a new breakup anthem song called “Shout Out to My Ex” that has everyone talking.
One of the members of Little Mix, Perrie Edwards, was in a four-year-long relationship and two-year-long engagement with previous One Direction member, Zayn Malik, which was a very well-known relationship in the music industry. The “ex” in the song was rumored to be referring to Malik because their engagement did not end in the best way, and some of the beginning lyrics correlated to known facts about Edwards’ relationship with Malik. Fans inferred the song was about him or any other exes the girls of Little Mix have had, but definitely Malik in particular.
The song’s debut was in their performance on the X-Factor U.K., which is where their career as a band began in 2011. Since then, “Shout Out to My Ex” reached up to number four on the Billboard 100 chart. It is now number 69 on the U.S. charts and remains number one in the U.K.
In an upbeat and sassy fashion, the song talks about dealing with a hard breakup and then getting back up on your feet and being stronger than you ever were before. The chords are simple, the beat is nice, the melody is catchy and the lyrics are fun and empowering to those trying to get past a difficult breakup. The song was stuck in my head for days and I’ve listened to it multiple times since then. I’m a huge fan of the song and I hope their new album is similar to it.
The song is extremely relatable, in my opinion. Many people go through experiences in relationships similar to this and have to accept when they come to an end. The song proves that it is possible to be stronger in the end, no matter how hurt you are at first.
I find the first verse in the song to be slightly catty, but that is actually one of the things I love about it. The first verse also contains a rather controversial and inappropriate lyric. However, the chorus is strong and simple and is the one part of the song you won’t be able to stop singing for weeks. Little Mix is known for being sassy and fun, and they definitely displayed that well in this song.
I would recommend this song to anyone trying to get over a breakup because I think the song’s lyrics will make them feel strong, while the major chords and upbeat melody will make them happy, too. You will find yourself singing and dancing along.
