Larry Hogan won election for a second term as Governor of Maryland. Hogan defeated Democratic counterpart Ben Jealous to win another term.
Middletown High School senior Cole Bromfield said, “He’s a decent guy, kind of in the middle, I think he’s done a good job.”
Hogan becomes first Republican governor to win reelection in Maryland since 1954. In a deep blue state such as Maryland, a Republican politician needs support from Democrats as well as Republicans. High approval ratings throughout his first term, as well as, a dislike of President Trump are main reasons for his blue support.
MHS senior Trent Edwards said, “Both Democrats and Republicans like him, he’s done a really good job and I’m glad he won.”
Hogan won with 56% of the vote according to the Associated Press.
“He’s a very liberal Republican, I’m happy he won,” MHS sophomore Ethan Schmiel said.
However Hogan isn’t universally liked.
“I don’t like that guy,” MHS senior Nina Hodos said.
In an address in Annapolis, Hogan said, “Tonight, in a deep-blue state in this blue year, with a blue wave, it turns out I can surf.”
