The common stereotype for somebody who knows how to solve a Rubix Cube is usually someone who is nerdy and very smart. However, this year at Middletown High School, Freshmen Sam Mcrea and James Bowman try to change that perception by starting a Rubix Cube club. It gives people who already know how to solve a rubix cube a place to cube, and also provides a place where beginners can learn and grow their cubing skills.
Mcrea started using Rubix Cubes about two to three years ago. He said he started because he was bored and wanted to find a new hobby. “I found Cubing through my friend Noble, he started before I did and I wanted to be better.” Now, starting from just boredom and a little bit of rivalry, and after much practice, he is great at cubing.
He and Bowman then had the idea to start the club at MHS. Mcrea stated that he wanted to give a place for people to improve their skills and wanted to “show that it isn’t so hard.” It also gave Mcrea a chance to improve and develop his leadership skills for jobs he may have in the future.
The club meets once a month, where all of the members are requested for Knights Quest, and if they want to, they go and use Rubix Cubes for thirty minutes together. They share advice and strategies that can make them solve cubes faster, They compete to see who can solve a certain cube the fastest, and just have a good time. “All you do is just solve cubes and hang out,” said one club member.
So far the club has been a success with a total of 14 registered members, which is a lot more than Mcrea expected. Club members are so far enjoying the club, being able to improve their skills and help each other improve. “So far I have really gotten better at cubing.” One club member stated. However, the club is relatively unknown, most people either don’t know about it or are too scared to try.
So maybe give the club a try next year. The club is a great experience where you can learn something new to impress your friends with. The club is said to be happening next year, so if you want to get a new experience, learn a new skill, or are just bored and want something to do, then consider joining the Rubix Cube Club next year in the MHS 2024-2025 school year!
