This year many members of the Hollywood industry have been outed as sexual abusers. In support, men and women alike wore black at the 2018 Golden Globes to stand with the people who have come out with their stories.
This past year, many people have told their stories of sexual abuse and assault. There have been allegations against at least fifty men in the industry and more of men in power. They came out with the support of other people who have been sexually assaulted through the hashtag, #Metoo.
The support continued at this year’s Golden Globes where people dressed in black and gave empowering speeches about the women in the industry. This got me thinking, was that really enough?
The idea behind wearing black was in the right place but, there were so many other things that could’ve been done with a more lasting impact. Like wearing nice clothing and donating it to the Time’s Up legal fund to help out victims of sexual assault.
I believe that there were things that could’ve left a larger mark than just wearing black, especially since all the men wear black suits and tuxedos anyway. Black is a classy colour and is worn often at awards ceremonies and other professional events.
It was an easy thing for people to downplay wearing black as just a fashion statement or compare it to previous years where a person had worn black.
Mostly I believe that, though it was a good effort, they just didn’t want to put themselves out there too much. Maybe they didn’t want public backlash, even if there was then the cause would be getting advertised more.
