Seniors, it’s your biggest year yet. This is the time when you are the most stressed. Filling out college applications, visiting campuses…it’s a lot to take on.
Last summer, I had found my dream school in Minnesota. Because it’s a private school, the tuition is expensive. Although it’s still on my list, I decided to look at different colleges in Maryland and around our area.
James Madison University was right up my alley. The campus was gorgeous. It had all the right majors for me, and plus, a lot of my friends had been accepted into the school year this fall, so next year I would know at least one person if I attended the school.
But, after looking at the cost, I was amazed. It cost 10,000 dollars more per year to attend if you lived out of state. Why should there be an in-state and out-of-state tuition? Wouldn’t this be considered discrimination?
I would understand having to pay extra money if you lived out of the country, but having to pay 40,000 dollars more for the same education one could get in Maryland is ridiculous!
In Minnesota, neighboring states do not have to pay for out-of-state tuition. Why is it not like that everywhere around the United States?
We are all the same, inside and out. So why do colleges treat us differently based on where we live?
People pay these high tuition prices each year for an out-of-state college. This could be why this “problem” hasn’t been addressed.
Seniors, my advice to you is to pick your college carefully, and to look at its tuition cost. You don’t want to be paying college bills for forever. So pay attention and good luck in the future in the search for your perfect college.

The in-state/out-of-state tuition issue is ridiculous. I think tuition should be the same for every student regardless where he/she is from, as long as they live in the US. Either way, you end up paying taxes somewhere in this country, so why does it matter which state you pay taxes to? Education should be less about money and more about education. No one should have to pay these outrageous student loans for the next 20 years of their lives.
