Hoping to continue the winning season streak, the MHS boy’s soccer team has set out this season with a new attitude.
Greg Norman, a 10 year veteran of soccer, and a competitive club player was nominated captain of the 2010 squad, along with Luke Welch.
The team plans to “come together as a team, and play for each other,” said Norman.
“We need to buckle down and get serious,” said Norman.
Getting serious is something the team may have lacked last year.
At practice the team plays harder than in the past so that they can have “game habits at games, rather than practice habits at games,” says Norman.
To prepare for tough components such as Urbana, practices consist of shooting and crossing the ball, and working on their transition game.
Other players to watch out for include Zach Fontenot, Eduardo de la Riva, and Luke Welch. Each being a different grade provides variety and a promising future for MHS boy’s varsity soccer.
Shane Falcinelli has big shoes to fill as he takes over the starting position of goalie for Matt Kuhn, one of the counties best goalies in 2009.
“Shane is doing well this season,” says Norman, “we can really count on him.”
With an experienced coach of 37 years, Bob Sheffler, the Varsity team plans to tuck away the state title this year.
