Many spring sports are underway with their first few weeks of practice. With snows days and damaged fields, spring sports teams have had much delay in starting their season. However, the cold weather hasn’t stopped the Middletown High School varsity softball team.
Throughout the year, players have joined travel teams, gone to Extra Innings, and attended early morning drop-ins before school.
Until the snow melts off the field and the temperature rises, the softball team has been practicing in the gym, using the weight room, the basketball court for throwing and the balcony for the hitting cages.
Beginning her fourth season as a varsity softball player and one of many players who have been working hard in the off-season is MHS senior Maddy Montgomery, who is eager to get her final season underway.
Last season, the varsity softball team made an incredible run to the regional championship game, a far cry from recent seasons. Unfortunately, its momentum stopped short, losing to Catoctin for the second year in a row on a last-inning home run.
Last season didn’t go as planned, but the Knights look to become a county threat this season and a team to watch out for.
Montgomery is the only senior returning this year and is excited to represent the senior class, taking on the leadership role for younger players. She will be playing several positions this season, including outfield, first base and catcher.
Other returning underclassmen players include pitcher Sami Main, Annie McClain (replacing MHS graduate Meagan Parker) at shortstop, Samantha Hockenberry in center field Kaela Pratt at catcher.
All five of these key players have had a lot of experience in these positions and will be huge influences and difference-makers on the field. Montgomery and the rest of the MHS softball team are eager for revenge and have one goal in mind: a State Championship.
