The Middletown High School wrestling team earned a 3rd place finish at the state wrestling championships on March 2 and 3 at Cole Field House on the campus of the University of Maryland College Park.
Senior Judd Zeigler won first place in a match against South Carroll High School’s Steve Schmitz, a 182lb. county title winner.“It was exciting and it felt relieving at the same time,” said Zeigler. Zeigler wrestled Schmitz a week earlier with similar results.
Zeigler credits his success to his drilling partner, senior Dylan Herrmann who earned a second place spot in the championship finals, saying that the two “benefitted from eachother”.
In addition to Herrmann, Zeigler also credited his own hard work and preparation. “This is something I’ve been working for pretty much every year of wrestling to get to the state championship,” said Zeigler.
Coach Schartner, the head coach of the team, reflected on the success of the team, saying that it was the most successful season in the history of the wrestling program at MHS.
“We had a great season…the kids worked real hard. That’s what we set our goals out to be; to work real hard and see what would happen,” said Schartner.
