It was a foggy, chilly, and wet night at Clarksburg High School as fans packed both the home and visitor sides to watch the visiting Knights upset the previously undefeated Coyotes 21 – 7.
The Coyotes received the opening kick.
Clarksburg had a long drive to open the game, but was stopped on a fourth and nine attempt.
Middletown immediately went three-and-out.
On the first play of the ensuing drive, Clarksburg ripped off a 57 yard touchdown run. The extra point was good, bringing the score to 7 – 0 Coyotes.
Rob Michels threw an interception on the next drive, and an unsportsmanlike conduct on the Coyotes placed the ball on their own nine yard line.
The Coyotes fumbled, recovered by the Knights on the 12 yard line.
Michels then threw a TD pass to Justin Boyer. Nathaniel Iott kicked through the extra point for a 7 – 7 tie.
The kickoff ended the first quarter.
Starting the second quarter, the Coyotes went three-and-out.
Middletown scored a TD on their next drive, on a pass to Justin Boyer. Iott’s kick made it 14 – 7 Knights.
The Knights defense held, forcing a Coyote three-and-out.
Aided by a third and ten pass interference, Michels drove the Knights to a touchdown, on a pass to Will Lyons. Iott kicked home the extra point for a 21 – 7 lead.
Clarksburg ran the ball to end the half, the score 21 – 7 Knights. The half was highlighted by a solid Middletown defense, with an offense that limited mistakes.
Middletown received the second half kickoff, and promptly went three-and-out.
Clarksburg went three-and-out, punting to Middletown.
Middletown went three-and-out, and returned the ball to Clarksburg.
On the first play of the ensuing drive, the Coyotes ripped off a 50 yard run to the Middletown six yard line. The Knights held the Coyotes to a fourth and goal at the five yard line. Middletown forced a fumble in the endzone and recovered for a touchback.
On third and thirteen of the next drive, the Michels threw a 50 yard pass to a wide open Adam Dulberger to the Clarksburg 15 to end the third quarter, 21 – 7 Knights.
Starting the fourth quarter, the Knights failed on a fourth down at the Clarksburg eight yard line.
The Knights defense held, stopping the Coyotes on a fourth down play.
Middletown’s offense did little, and punted away the ball.
The Knights held the Coyotes to a fourth and 20 attempt, and Koby Cavanagh intercepted the pass.
Middletown failed on a fourth and three on the Clarksburg six yard line.
The Knights defense held the Coyotes to a fourth and 11 try, and Dulberger intercepted the pass with two minutes remaining in the game.
Middletown downed the ball a few times to end the game, the score 21 – 7 Knights.
The Knights came into the game facing an uphill battle, and answered the call. They played near flawless defense, and controlled the ball on offense. The offense moved the ball when they had to, and scored the upset.
