With two big wins under their belt, the Middletown Varsity Girls soccer team hopes to be just as successful the rest of their 2010 season.
Beating Winters Mills in penalty kicks just a couple weeks into the season Middletown already has one of their biggest rivals locked up and put away.
“Our goal is to go farther than we did last year and hopefully win states,” said Jacky Kessler, a senior and leader on the Middletown squad.
It is no secret they have further challenges to overcome later in their season, looking on to Tuscarora and Urbana who will be the two biggest threats keeping them from winning states.
Working on shooting, passing and even switching several players into foreign positions is a way for the knights to improve on their skills and continue their success.
“We have made a lot of changes in the line up but obviously it has had a very positive effect on the team,” said Jacky Kessler, a leading scorer in Frederick County.
As the lady Knights continue their season they know each others strength and weaknesses except for one particular player who it may be a harder for.
Mary Ann Pritts, a freshman on the Middletown team says that “I feel very comfortable with everyone and everything but it is still hard sometimes because of all the pressure of being on the Varsity squad.”
Mary Ann also agrees with Jacky in what there biggest goal is- to win states.
The transition from JV to Varsity was definitely tough for Mary Ann “The girls are faster, stronger and more physical. It’s a whole different game out there.”
But with the talented freshman and along with her gifted teammates by her side, the Knights look forward to what could be the makings of a promising season.
