The student section at Walkersville High School was silent.
The reason? The Middletown Knights girls basketball team. The Knights controlled the game from start to finish.
Taking off to an 18-2 lead only 10 minutes into the game, the Knights girls worked together to dominate the Lions in every aspect of the game.
Going into halftime with a 24-9 lead, the Knights felt confident. Every player, though, knew the game wasn’t over yet.
“Coach told us the game wasn’t over yet and that we had to keep playing hard,” said senior Madeline Keimig
Beginning the second half, the Lions controlled the tempo of the game. By the end, the Knights fought back against any of the Lions runs with a strong defense.
“We worked hard in practice on defense and it showed in the game,” said Alyssa Oursler. “We shut them down.”
Oursler led the Knights with 13 points and nine rebounds. She got to the free throw line, played hard, and fought the entire game for the team.
The back court of the Knights, Madeline Keimig and Kallie House, were flawless. On defense, the senior duo caused a lot of problems for the Lions. Keimig also helped, making two three-pointers and dropping 12 points for the game.
Down low for the Knights, senior Danielle Robinson was great. She tore down rebounds and fought through fouls all night.
Robinson wasn’t alone, though; sophomore Chrissy Payne was next to her all night fighting.
Overall, the Knights never looked back from their early lead. They were just better than the Lions on that night.
Bill Miskell, the coach of the Knights, felt great after the game. He was happy his team left Walkersville with a win.
On the Lions side, most of the scoring came from Krysten Grossnickle. Grossnickle dropped 12 points for the Lions.
The Knights have only a few games left and look to end the season on a high note.
