As the 2009 field hockey season approaches there is much anticipation as to how Middletown High School’s varsity team will do.
With players eager to get out and play, the Knights hope to have a winning season despite difficult opponents.
MHS senior Erin David, goalie and captain, has been encouraged by the team’s tremendous team play and ability to mesh quickly despite several new members.
“We’ve been working really hard and have the makings for a great season,” said David.
In addition to a solid start to the season, the team not only has to maintain its work rate. It also has to improve steadily in order to achieve its primary goal: a state championship.
MHS sophomore Erin Wein, a starting midfielder, is adjusting well for her first year being on the varsity team. With six years of experience, Wein has transitioned smoothly to the high-intensity playing style required of a varsity athlete.
Along with years of experience, the underclassman starter has played under Coach Ginni DuMars in the past, which has helped prepare her for the 100 percent daily effort expected of her.
“Compared to JV, there’s no slacking, the practices are longer, and we train a lot harder,” Wein said.
Wein believes the team’s exceptional passing and shooting abilities will lead to an effective offense this season.
Although the team has many promising strengths, according to Wein, the team communication on the field has room for improvement.
As coaches, fans, and players gear up for the 2009 season, the Knight’s field hockey team is looking to have a successful season; all it needs is the fans’ support and consistent hard work and perseverance.
