Spirit Week is a way for a school to show off its school pride and rile excitement for the Homecoming game. Middletown High School students and faculty had the chance to show off their school pride in its annual Spirit Week.
MHS students, as well as teachers, became pumped up for homecoming weekend by dressing up in themed outfits on Oct. 6-11. The variety of spirit days gave everyone a chance to participate.
Students and teachers could show their spirit by wearing their favorite sports team jersey on Monday, tie-dye on Tuesday, dressing up for their favorite era on Wednesday, and wearing the school colors on Friday.
Spirit week is a long held but dwindling tradition to get everyone excited for the football game on Friday and the dance on Saturday night. Spirit week has become a less celebrated event in the past years, and participation has dropped in correlation. Many students feel the days chosen for spirit week are overrated and should be improved.
Carly Fisher, a junior at MHS, said “People would like the spirit days if they were more interesting. ‘Tie-dye Tuesday?’ That’s like everyday at Middletown.” Having more creative themes is a possible way to improve participation in spirit week.
Taking spirit days to the extreme has also been an issue at MHS. Students were told to wash off any excessive amounts of face paint. Wearing face paint was still allowed and even encouraged, but the students had to be easily identifiable and the paint could not be distracting from the learning environment.
