Although Puxatawney Phil predicted that winter would not extend six weeks on Groundhog Day, his prediction was countered by an impromptu, school cancelling snow storm on Feb. 22. Though many were pleased by the break from school activities, many others did not think much of the snow day.
Middletown High School junior, Sayre Posey, lives near the snow plow storage area, and was able to deduce from the abundant buzz of the snow plows that school would be cancelled. Posey, like many other MHS students, appreciated the extra time the break allotted her to complete her school work.
With the snow, all school functions were cancelled. This included rehearsals for the upcoming spring musical, “Crazy for You”. MHS senior Sarah Brierly was disappointed. “I ended up sleeping all day.”
Many students took the opportunity to bask in all the activities the snow had to offer. MHS sophomore Olivia Christ was able to go sledding with friends. Many other students were able to visit local skiing/snowboarding sites such as Whitetail and Ski Liberty.
Teachers, too, have been able to take the greatest advantage of the snow storm, although many of them, including social studies teacher John Kirkendall and guidance counselor Sue Blair, are less than thrilled about the excessive shoveling a snow day brings.
Although snow days are appreciated by many MHS students and faculty, this past snow day is the fifth, which means that if there is another snow day, underclassmen and faculty will extend the school year further into June.
