“The National English Honor Society (NEHS), founded and sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta, is the only national organization exclusively for high school students and faculty who, in the field of English, merit special note for past and current accomplishments,” according to nehs.us.
Middletown High School’s National English Honor Society has had the privilege to induct its new members on Jan. 5. Middletown High School principal Jay Berno opened the ceremony with his thoughts, “Look into your heart, allowing your vision to come clear.”
MHS 2010 graduate and NEHS member Kevin Parker announced the inductee’s names and students were excited to receive their certificates.
“I am so honored to be a part of NEHS. I was so excited to get my award and I can’t wait until the club gets started,” said MHS senior Sarah Woods.
MHS English teacher Debbie Leonard started the club two years ago because she “though that MHS had a caliber of students that could contribute.” Leonard also said, “I would like to see a publication of student writing and an activity that would benefit the community because the chapter consists of seniors and they have a closeness that comes together.”
Leonard closed the ceremony with a closing from a poem by Emily Dickinson. “We never know how high we are till we are asked to rise, and then if we are true to plan, our statures touch the skies.”
