The Gay Straight Alliance is a relatively new club at Middletown High School. This is their second year in commission. Last year the club focused on introducing the new idea to MHS.
GSA is a “support group for the Gay Lesbian Bi-sexual Trans-gender Queer community and an advocacy group within the school system,” said MHS senior Nick Etheridge.
This club focuses on helping one another and also reaching out to the community and trying to create tolerance.
Etheridge said, “GSA has provided me with somewhere I can safely talk about personal issues involving being bi-sexual.”
When asked what GSA had planned for this year Etheridge said they were planning a leadership workshop at Frederick Community College, the annual Day of Silence, and they are making plans to go to Washington, D.C. to see the Gay Men’s Choir.
One way the club is trying to create a tolerance is by hosting alliance week. The GSA set up an informational table during all lunch shifts where they also accepted pledges from MHS students. Students pledged to not use derogatory terms towards homosexuals.
