The Empty Bowls Banquet was held March 23 at Middletown High School, an event held to raise awareness about hunger and benefit the impoverished in Frederick County. The Empty Bowls Project is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger that was created by the Imagine Render Group. People paid 12 dollars at the door (6 dollars for children under 12) and all money raised went to Middletown Food Bank and Middletown Valley People Helping People.
There was also a silent auction for items donated by local artists and businesses, as well as an art show with art from MHS and other schools in the county. Those who attended were asked to keep the bowls that they recieved (made by MHS’s ceremics and art classes) to remind them of the banquet and all the empty bowls in the world.
The MHS Vocal Ensemble sang three songs, The Star Spangled Banner, Who Will Fill These Empty Bowls (composed by director Lori Bower and featuring soloists Josh Green, sophomore, and Erin Casey, senior), and Come To The Music.
As people ate at the banquet they were able to draw on the tables which had been covered in paper with the provided Crayons.
Patty Hurwitz, the chair of the “Field of Hope” project of Foods Resource Bank spoke, as well as Kendal Neel, a Myersville Elementary School Student who spoke about the history of the Empty Bowls Banquet.
Food was provided by Carrabba’s Italian Grill.
