Lent, beginning on March 9th, is a 40 day period of “fasting” leading up to the feast of Easter.
Many Christians use lent as a time for self examination, but in more recent years more people, not just Christians, have joined in the challenge and attempted to give something up.
The long term holiday is celebrated to recall Jesus’ 40-day fast in the wilderness where he was preparing for his ministry by facing temptations that could lead him to abandon his mission and calling of helping people.
Fasting starts on Ash Wednesday and lasts all the way though Easter. At this time, people give something up that is important to them, for those 40 days, which in return is suppose to make them a better person.
The fasting can be giving up something as simple as giving up chocolate, or as difficult as no longer using the internet, or your cell phone. Whatever the case may be it should be a sacrifice to that person.
Some of the most common things people have given up throughout the years are meat, sweets, alcohol, and other types of food. Many students from Middletown High School are taking place in this unique challenge and celebration and giving up something of their choosing.
“I didn’t actually give up anything for lent; I’m just trying to be an all around better person,” said chemistry teacher Jane Brandt.
