Students at Middletown High School are bringing the old styles back. What once was old is now the new. Clothing worn in the 60’s and 70’s is now becoming a popular style of vintage clothing and has become more fashionable to teens.
“I wear vintage clothing rather than the newer brands because they aren’t as common as the brand clothing and sometimes you can find a unique piece,” said MHS senior Selene Mejia.
Over sized sweaters, black framed sunglasses, hourglass figure dresses or lacy dresses, leggings and more are all making a comeback from past decades.
Many students are finding these classic outfits at stores such as Rugged Wearhouse or Goodwill. Although it may take some searching, sometimes great treasures can be found when you look hard enough.
“I found this amazing dusty rose colored chiffon ball gown once, and with a few adjustments I hope to make it into something very elegant that I could wear to a formal dance like prom,” said MHS junior Jessica Elliott.
Designers have always turned to the past for inspiration, and vintage clothing is often known and used as a source for one-of-a-kind styles. Students can let their individuality and personality’s shine in a style that describes them. Getting new clothes from department stores can be expensive, and the clothes can all have a similar look to them making it hard to be different.
Classic outfits from the fifties, sixties, seventies, and even the eighties have become increasingly popular in this decade because of how much variety they have and how different they are compared to a lot of this era’s styles.
Many students still stick to wearing the name brands like Hollister or Aeropostale, even with the increase in popularity that clothing from vintage stores has had. It just shows that your personality can shine through in whatever you wear.
