If you ask most people who their favorite X-Men character is, most will answer Wolverine. Who doesn’t love the mysterious guy with metal claws who will kick your butt?
In the first and second X-Men movies, we learned a bit about Wolverine and his history with Stryker. X-Men Origins: Wolverine fleshes out the story and lets us in on not only how he knew enemies like Sabretooth and former allies like Stryker, but explains how he became Wolverine and Weapon X.
The basic story follows Logan (then James) and his relationship with his secret brother Victor Creed (Sabretooth). Logan becomes involved in a secret government team called Team X, which apprehended other mutants and undertook black ops missions. Logan would eventually have a falling out with Team X, and would try to live out the rest of his life.
The story can be looked at two ways: its faithfulness to the Wolverine: Origins comics, and it’=s general flow as a movie. Looking at it from the comic standpoint, many will feel disappointed; Sabretooth is now Wolverine’s brother (they were friends in the comics) and it goes into what could be called “unnecessary” details, such as were he gets his iconic jacket from the first film.
However, all of these so-called problems become moot when you look at it for what it is: an explanation of a great character and how his past life effects his present. The story is good and goes into detail on his interactions with other mutants. The only problem is a cop out at the end that tries to neatly close all the plot lines.
Without a doubt, the story would not have been good at all had it not been for the great acting. Hugh Jackman seems almost at home while playing Wolverine and does a fantastic job of displaying all the emotional reactions you would expect.
Oddly enough, I loved Ryan Renolds playing the smart-mouthed Wade Wilson/Deadpool and wished that we had the opportunity to see more of him (word is a spinoff is in the works).
The special effects in the movie were top notch, on par with most high budget movies. There is a sequence at the beginning that transitions between different wars America has fought in and it is done perfectly. Not to mention, the finale was a great spectacle with lasers and nuclear power plants.
The movie was great and was everything fans would expect it to be. It helped to complete a lot of Wolverine’s past and opened the doors to the beginning of the X-Men. There were only a few bad parts in the story, but they are overshadowed from the pure adrenaline that this movie caries. Whether or not someone is a comic fan or not, they could definitely get into this movie.
