The Pixar animated movie Wall-E, directed by Andrew Stanton, has proved to be another multimillion dollar hit for Walt Disney’s Pixar Animation Studios. Set far in the future, it is the story of a robot named Wall-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) who was designed to clean up the polluted Earth.
As pollution succumbs the Earth, it becomes uninhabitable and all humans abandon it to live in a luxury aircraft in space. Wall-E is left behind, alone. As he continues to do his job, cleaning the trash and waste covering every surface of the Earth, his life is turned upside-down when Eve(Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator), a high technology robot sent back to Earth to search for the presence of plant life, finds and befriends him on her quest.
Wall-E teaches her and welcomes her into his life; he falls head over heels for the chic and high-tech robot. However, plans go awry when Eve sees the plant Wall-E gives to her as a gift and shuts down as she waits for the space craft to return and pick her up. When she is taken back by the ship, Wall-E follows to save her.
As they fight together to save each other and prove to the humans that it is time to go back home, the audience falls in love with these one-of-a-kind characters and the genuine loyalty and love they have for one another.
Although, it takes a certain amount of “suspension of disbelief” to see past the personification of the robots’ emotions and speech, it certainly becomes believable. I almost felt they were real people by the end of the movie.
The impressive and realistic animation of not only debris on Earth but also the stars, sky, and solar system, take this movie to an entirely higher level. There is no question why it has won the 2009 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature or the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature.
With Wall-E’s catchy theme song through out the movie of “Put on Your Sunday Clothes” from the musical Hello Dolly! to Thomas Newman’s own compositions made especially for the movie, the music is unique and fun adding more to every scene. With the lack of dialogue, it also helps express the emotions of the robots and keeps the story flowing effectively.
Apart from the apparent story of Wall-E and Eve’s journey, there is also a much deeper message in this movie. It represents what could become of the Earth and of our way of life, if we do not take care of our planet. The movie portrays what could happen if humans do not put more energy into cleaning up the Earth and preserving it.
While humans stay in chairs throughout their entire existence in space, doing nothing but eating, gaining weight, and losing bone mass; the Earth is left collecting dust, covered in mounds of waste and trash, unable to grow any plant life or support any animal life.
As a society facing environmental problems today on a smaller scale, and seeing them emerge to become bigger issues, now is the time to act and fix them before we end up floating in space for 700 years.
Wall-E is a perfect example of a classic Disney movie the entire family can enjoy and can leave everyone with a different message to take away from it. The characters are undeniably adorable and extremely memorable. With impressive animation and a wonderful story this movie will surely become a classic.
