Burnout Paradise is Burnout’s first jump to the PC, and with the added downloadable content, it brings back the great crashes and adds a whole host of new modes set in an open world. Unfortunately, it’s not quite enough to make it as good as the Burnout games of the past.
The basic premise of Burnout, the player running a car into stuff to make great looking crashes, holds up and looks better than ever but some key modes are missing and often times it’s too hard to get from one event to the next.
The open world factor in Burnout is a great addition that lends itself really well to the mechanics of the game. The player can go to junkyards to change the car, repair shops to fix it, and a gas stations to refill their boost. Starting events simply requires the player to spin their tires, and away they go.
The main issue with the open world set up is the player will frequently find a event ending in a area where there are no nearby races to start, so they’ll end up driving for a minute or two to get to a event.
The graphics in this game go above and beyond the previous games. The physics on the car wrecks are the best part. The player can hit a wall with the right side of their car going 100 miles per hour and, in slow motion, the player can see their car crunch, the windshield break, and their car spins around and hits what ever else is in the way.
The events in this game work well and give the player a great opportunity to take advantage of the environment. There are a bunch of jumps and shortcuts the player can use to get ahead of their rivals. Not to mention they can choose their own route to win, since it remains a open world even during races.
The controls are easy, for the most part, but if the player is playing on the PC, they should make sure that they use the Xbox 360 controller, as the keyboard is impossible. The game modes are good, but it left out the Rampage mode that made the last few Burnout games really fun. On top of that, like all EA sports games, it comes with a great soundtrack This deserves a solid 7/10
