Greivis Vasquez is a player you either love or hate. If you’re a Maryland Terrapin fan, you love him. Everyone else in college basketball falls in the other category. Vasquez can be unpredictable at times, making great passes to team mates and hitting shots that no one else can make. He also brings a great love to the game and an attitude that no one can stop; if they try, he will make them pay.
UMD is a team that barely snuck into the dance. With a 27 point showing in the first round against California, they moved onto the second seeded Memphis.
Every time Vasquez made a mistake, the California fans let him know it. Once or twice it appeared to affect him, until he got annoyed by it.
Midway through the second half, Vasquez air-balled a three point try and the California fans chanted “air ball” for minutes.
Once they stopped, it was time for the Vasquez show.
After the chants, he stole the ball and laid it in for an easy bucket. After the layup, he put his finger to his lip and told the California fan section to be quit.
Then, seconds later, he hit a big three that gave the Terrapins a double digit lead. Once again, Vasquez had something to tell the California fans, blowing them kisses all the way down the court.
Many fans found this disrespectful to the game and it’s that type of actions that kill Vasquez. I think those type of actions make Vasquez the player he is.
Some of the things he does make him better and more competitive. He is almost playing two games: one against the visiting team and the other against their fans. He hates losing, whether it’s to the team he is playing, or the fans. Vasquez is the best thing to hit Maryland since their National Championship year with Juan Dixon.
