“Those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind” by – Dr. Seuss.
Improvisation games are meant to test how quickly a person can think of something to do for a scene.
My pet peeve when we do these games is people who are afraid to act silly and look stupid. It really gets under my skin. Not only is it holding them back but I feel insulted that they don’t trust me or anyone else enough to be themselves and not judge them.
They don’t seem to understand that everyone else is in the same boat and feels the same way. They don’t seem to get that no one expects them to be a Dane Cook or come up with brilliant ideas every second.
It’s just meant to be fun and provide everyone with a good laugh.
It’s scary because at our age, no one wants to look stupid; we all just want to be liked and fit in. I know this and once upon a time, I hated doing improvisation games because I didn’t think any of my ideas were funny.
Then one day I just went for it and everyone loved my character and lines. I had a blast and I made new friends because they came over and congratulated me afterward.
I had one of those light bulb moments and I finally understood.
Improvisation not only tests how quickly you can think but how quickly you can just go for it.
